Shello! My name is Mermaid HeArt
I am an Autistic Mermaid, Artist and Founder of Mermaids 4 Mental Health.
As an Autistic Mermaid with Lived Experience, this is my dream, to give back to our beautiful Mermaid Community. My hope is to continue to create more Mental Health Resources through my Art, Comics, Podcast, and the brand new Colouring Book, "Mermaids ARE Self Care"!
Meet the Mer-bassadors!
Mermaid Kona
Mermaid Kona is an older mermaid and a mum who resides in Geelong, Victoria.
"I was diagnosed with PTSD, complex anxiety, and depression, so I know what it's like to be excluded from friendships and events.
One thing I found with mermaiding is that it helped my mental health a lot, I also practice mindfulness floats. One of the main reasons I decided to be a Merbassador for mental health because I am a fighter for inclusion, and I know I can bring understanding, compassion, and help to others when they need it.
A survivor can help others survive."
Mermaid Namielle
Namielle is a PNW based professional mermaid and has been making waves since 2015. She leads the most established performance pod in her area, WISP: Whidbey Island Sirens Pod. And she has been recognized for her dedication and passion in mermaiding in many ways within the mermaid community.
Namielle is a huge advocate for how mermaiding encourages healing through creative expression, healthy escapism, and reconnection to both nature and community. She is more than happy to "swim with you" too.
The Blixunami
The Blixunami is nonbinary merperson from South Carolina & living in NYC that advocates for everyone to live out their dreams regardless of life's uncontrollable elements or what anyone thinks.
Having PTSD, anxiety, depression, & a lived experience of suicidal attempts, they know first hand how to feels be to closed up in your shell in a dark place. However the mermaid lifestyle brings light to those dark moments.
The best thing about mermaiding for me is that it helps with my mental health tremendously! Without mermaids and being able to put on a tail, I would be lost. I'll never stop mermaiding and I'll never stop inspiring others to also tail up and live their best fishy life!
Mermaid Periwinkle
Mermaid Periwinkle Sherbet is a body positive, plus-sized mermaid over the age of 40. She loves meeting merfolk all over the world, and she believes that mermaiding is for everyone. One of the reasons Periwinkle participates in mermaiding is that it has an incredi-bubbly positive impact on her self-perception and has helped her have the courage to try new things.
Mermaiding has opened many paths for her that she would never have dreamed of without it. Mermaiding is also a key method for her of practicing self-care, particularly as she serves those who struggle with their own mental health and as she supports individuals who experience various forms of discrimination and harassment. Mermaid Periwinkle is always happy to connect with merfolk and loves helping the mermunity learn and grow. Her favorite saying is, "Bubbles and hugs!"
Mermaid Mari
Hi! I’m Mermaid Mari, and I’m from Tasmania, Australia
I have autism, and a chronic pain disability, and swimming helps me feel so much better mentally and physically. Whenever I can put on a tail, I know that day will be a good day. I believe that everyone deserves to find their happy place to help them through their struggles, and for me and many others, it’s swimming as a mythical creature!
Mermaiding is for everyone, no matter your gender, age, ability, or anything else! It’s a wonderful hobby that can do so much for your brain and body, and can help you make new friends and connections too!
Mermaid Latyana
Mermaid Latyana is a mermaid living the sea-change life near Geelong having moved across from the other side of Melbourne city in Victoria, Australia.
"I have struggled with anxiety that started when I was a child when a car accident left me with facial scarring. As an adult I was diagnosed with depression that was inflamed by toxic workplaces that made me feeling worthless. I still have days when functioning is difficult: times when that darkness invades my mind and leaves me feeling down .... but the mer life has helped shine light on these dark times.
Mermaiding has helped reconnect me to my love of the water which started as a swimmer, swimming teacher and marine biology/botany graduate. The act of swimming in the diverse ocean environment is soul renewing and the motions are like meditation to me which helps my mental health immensely.
Being a mermaid has also connected me to beautiful creative mers all over the world who are supportive and help the world be a better, more magical place. I feel so grateful to be included in such a wonderful community and hope to spread the positivity of mermaiding to as many people as possible.
I'll swim with you!"
Mermaid Kaz
Shello! I am Mermaid Kaz, and I swim from the cold waters of Tasmania, the little island state below Australia!
I have battled anxiety, depression, eating disorders and BPD since I was a teen. I am now 40 and it’s a daily battle to fight my dark passenger, but I pride myself on my strength and determination. I am also a domestic violence survivor and a single mama to two amazing little boys. I was also bullied relentlessly as a child and teen. Becoming a real-life mermaid has seen me reclaim myself as a strong survivor who is no longer a victim.
Mermaiding feels like it has always been in my blood, and the peace and mental silence I have discovered on the ocean floor is something I have been looking for my entire life. That’s why I worked extremely hard to become one of Australia’s first PADI Mermaid Instructors, to help others find that same peace and joy.
Mental health is something I am very passionate about, and I am always here to listen and help where I can. I will swim with you!
Mermaid Merliah
Naturally I always felt like a mermaid until I found out in my teens that there was a whole community with mermaid costumes out there. I had started an underwater photography company when I was 19 and worked on an island. It was through mermaiding that I learned to love living life.
Diagnosed with chronic depression and anxiety I found it very hard to be around people or do daily tasks. But once I hit the water with my tail, the noise went away. I was the first plus sized mermaid in Asia, and I was set to make waves and show every little human out there that you can be whatever you want to be, to not listen to what everyone else has to say about you. I went viral after doing a show in China and the internet absolutely tore me apart with body shaming comments but in that I grew more determined.
I found that I wanted to share my struggles and my journey with everyone online as My story might make someone else feel less alone. Somehow I managed to be an ambassador for Finfolk productions and that’s when I knew the world was listening to me and my stories.
